Why is SMS Reminder becoming Kalama?

Same product, same team, same account — only the name and the logo have changed. Nothing you need to do.

SMS Reminder is becoming Kalama. It is the same product, the same team and the same account — only the name and the logo are changing. Nothing about your plan, your billing or your reminders is different, and there is nothing you need to do.

The short answer

You have not been switched to a different service and your account has not been affected.

Soon, we're changing our name from SMS Reminder to Kalama. For a while you will see it written as "Kalama, formerly SMS Reminder" so it is clear you are in the right place.

It is pronounced KAL-uh-muh — the first syllable sounds like the start of calendar.

Does anything change for me?

No.

  • Your plan and price are unchanged.

  • Your billing date is unchanged.

  • Your login is the same — same email address, same password, same web address.

  • Your reminder and booking settings are exactly as you left them.

  • You do not need to reinstall the add-on, extension, app or plugin.

Where to find Kalama in Google Calendar

If you use Kalama in Google Calendar, the icon in the right-hand side panel will change from the calendar icon to the Kalama icon. It's the same add-on in the same spot, and you don't need to reinstall anything.

Google Calendar's right-hand icon strip, before and after: the calendar icon is replaced by the Kalama icon in the same position.

Click the Kalama icon to open the side panel. Your account, reminders and plan are all there, just as before.

Google Calendar with the Kalama side panel open, with the Kalama icon circled in the right-hand icon strip.

You'll also see Kalama in the event window, on the line where you set up the reminder for an appointment. Save the event first, then set up the reminder, the same as today.

The icon updates once Google approves the change, so it may show up a little after the rest of the rename. Until then, you'll keep seeing the old icon, and everything works the same.

Why change the name?

SMS Reminder started with appointment reminders by text. That was all it did, and the name said so. Since then, the product has grown:

  • Where we started: appointment reminders by text.

  • Where we are: booking pages, two-way texting and calendar sync.

  • Where we're going: answering your clients, booking them in and following up, even when you're busy.

SMS Reminder was the right name for where we started. Kalama is the name for where we're going.

Where does the name come from? 🐙

Kalama is inspired by cephalopods, the family that includes the octopus and cuttlefish. They're known for sharp memories, and an octopus's arms can each taste, touch and move on their own. Running a small service business works the same way: you keep track of every client while wearing every hat. Kalama is the arm that takes appointments off your plate.

Will my clients notice anything?

The reminders and booking confirmations your clients receive are unchanged.

If you have added your own business name or message text, that stays exactly as you set it.

My invoice, receipt or app store listing still says SMS Reminder

That is expected during the transition.

Each place the name appears updates on its own schedule, and the app store listings depend on each marketplace's review process, which we do not control. Over a few weeks you will see the name change across:

  • The website

  • The web app

  • The Google Workspace Marketplace listings

  • The Chrome Web Store listing

  • The Shopify App Store listing

  • The WordPress plugin directory listing

Seeing the old name in one place and the new name in another during this period does not mean anything is wrong.

Is this a different company? Have I been sold to someone else?

No. Same company, same team, same people you have been emailing. Only the name has changed.

If you receive an email or a message about this rename that asks you to log in, confirm payment details or click through to update your account, it is not from us. We will never ask you to do any of those things because of a name change. Forward anything suspicious to support and we will confirm whether it came from us.

I preferred the old name

That is fair, and a few people will. The reasoning is above, and the product you are paying for has not changed in any way.

Still stuck?

Contact us at [email protected] and let us know which product you are using — the web app, Google Calendar, Chrome, Shopify or WordPress — so we can point you at the right place.

That support address keeps working throughout the transition and afterwards.
